Color and Play Games

Welcome to Ozark Folk Center Playground!

Pioneer children had simple toys and games, many of which have been passed down through the ages and are still enjoyed today. Toys and dolls were made from available materials, such as pebbles, rope, wood, wool and cloth. Children played jacks or "knucklebones," dating back to ancient Greece, and follow-the-leader, originating in the 12th century. Below you will find samples of pioneer children's games.

Fox & Geese is a very old board game that was brought to the Ozark region by the first European settlers. This game was based on Solitaire and is fun for people of all ages. The object is for the geese to pen up both foxes or for the foxes to capture twelve of the geese.
